We Fell in Love with Alta!

Rachel and Kathryn headed to Alta in September to visit some of our favorite partners. Here is a travel letter from Kathryn, offering her insights from their journey to this Arctic gem.

“Alta has a way of surprising you. From the daily Northern Light sightings (in September even) to salmon jumping out of the river, Alta really is a remarkable place. The town lies just above the Arctic Circle, so as I arrived, the crisp fresh air invigorated my senses, and I felt my shoulders drop and peace rush over me.

I was lucky enough to spend my days exploring this beautiful town and meeting the most friendly, passionate locals. Surrounded by breathtaking landscape, Alta has a varied range of cultural, spiritual and adventurous experiences.

On the cultural side, we visited Alta Museum to see the impressive ancient rock carvings. We then enjoy traditional Sami lunch, reindeer stew, whilst sharing stories and laughter around a fire. The warmth and hospitality of the Sami people left a lasting impression.   Alta is not short on adventure activities. These include husky sledding with some of the best mushers in the world, hiking, biking, rib boating to remote islands, river boating, fishing, snowmobiling and whale watching. The list goes on, but you get my drift. There is plenty on offer.

The one that surprised me the most was the spiritual side of Alta. Due to Alta’s location in the auroral oval, the likelihood of clear skies and seeing the Northern Lights compared to other areas is high. Seeing the shimmering colours dancing across the sky really evoked feelings of wonder and connection to something greater than oneself. It reminded me of our place in the universe and gave me a moment to reflect on my life and my purpose.

As I prepared to leave Alta, I felt a mix of gratitude and nostalgia. Alta had captured my heart, and I felt lucky knowing that our lovely guests would be able to visit this beautiful part of Norway.”
